Wacky Office Tools: Luminous folder icons
(c) Marmalade Moon, used with permission
When two different clients twice mentioned Kate England’s work over at Marmalade Moon, I had to check it out. I mean, just the name sounded delicious!
Kate is a visual artist and designer who (among other things) creates icons that make desktop organizing easier. They’re appealing to the eye. I confess I haven’t tried these yet, but the idea of color-coded folders on my computer desktop sounds amazing. Lots of creative people think in color, not words — so it’s worth taking a look.
Kate even offers a whole line of free folder icons, which if you’re tempted by the idea they would allow you to play with this concept (and try it out) without spending a dime. I’m going to give them a whirl the next time I organize my desktop.
Best of all? Kate provides instructions how to set up and use these icons on your own desktop, step-by-step. They work for PC and Mac.
Thoughts? Me-toos? If you have used these, what do you think?

As one of the clients who emailed Jen about these, I’ve been using Kate’s icons for quite some time. They’ve really helped my computer filing time be more productive.
I’m very visual. I recognize the colors WAY before I read the folder titles. In a long list of documents, color coding the folders in My Documents really helps.
Another thing I highly recommend on Kate’s site is the Legacy Icon Archive: http://www.marmalademoon.com/legacy-icon-archive/
There are some absolutely *gorgeous* flowers in the archive: cherry blossoms, lilacs, daffodils, snowdrops, etc. The logo I’m using for my business is a cherry blossom. The folder holding the info for my web redesign project is now a cherry blossom. =) Way more fun and cheerful to look at than plain boring folders!
Do join Club Marmalade Moon. Kate sends out special “club members only” newsletters & icons four times a year. I hadn’t signed up in time, but a while back there were way too cute cupcake icons! Her wallpapers are also gorgeous!

Wow. These are BEAUTIFUL! I quickly put one of the free screensavers on my desktop, then just added a bunch of colorful folders. There’s nothing in them yet, but they’re so gorgeous that I don’t even care! It makes using my computer more enjoyable just to see them! And eventually I’ll make them more functional (I think!)
